Hard Disk Drive Degaussing

Information on a hard disk drive is stored on "platters" using a magnetic charge. Degaussers are used to remove this magnetic charge quickly and effectively. A hard disk drive Degausser uses a short, very powerful electromagnetic discharge (pulse) with which the magnetic charge on the platters of a hard drive is completely erased.

When a Degausser is used to erase a hard disk drive, it is no longer suitable for reuse as various internal components are physically damaged by the strong electromagnetic discharge. Erasers are available to sanitize hard disk drives for reuse.

Hard Disk Drive Destruction

Data on a hard disk drive can be deleted with a Degausser or sanitized with an Eraser. Often as a second step in the data destruction process, the hard drive is also physically damaged. Different types of Destroyers are available for this purpose; A hard disk can be pierced with a "puncher", bent in a 90-degree angle with a "crusher" or grinded into pieces with a "shredder".

When destroying hard disk drives without first wiping them with a Degausser or sanitizing them with an Eraser, it must be taken into account that the magnetic charge on the hard disk platters is still present. Even on a small fragment of a hard disk platter, gigabytes of information are still present.

Hard Disk Drive Sanitization

Erasers are available to santize hard disk drives that need to be reused. An Eraser can simultaneously sanatize one or more hard disks by overwriting any existing information. You may choose from different Erase methods; Quick, Full, Secure, DoD and DoD 7-pass Erase. When using the US Department of Defense 5220.22-M standard, a hard disk drive is overwritten in multiple cycles.

A big disadvantage of sanitization is the required time; depending on the capacity and speed of a hard disk drive, overwriting can take up to several hours. If a hard disk drive does not need to be reused, it is faster and safer to use a Degausser.

Hard Disk Drive Degaussing and Destruction

Degaussing and destruction can be combined when disposing of hard disk drives; data removal and physical destruction. First the information on a hard disk is wiped with a Degausser. The magnetic signal on the hard drive platters is removed completely and permanently.

After degaussing, a hard disk drive can be physically damaged with a Destroyer. A hard disk can be pierced with a "puncher", bent in a 90-degree angle with a "crusher" or grinded into pieces with a "shredder". We supply different Degausser-Destroyer combinations.
